Guga

Gustavo Kuerten (Florianópolis, September 10, 1976), known as Guga, affective common surname in his country for the first name Gustavo, is a former professional tennis player from Brazil, the best player in Brazilian tennis history. His first major accomplishment was helping the Brazilian team's Davis Cup team defeat Austria in 1996 and reached the first division competition, the World Group. After two years as a professional, Kuerten in 1997 rose to the position of number two player in Brazil, being ranked below only Fernando Meligeni. The same year he became the first male tennis player to win a Brazilian tournament in singles Grand Slam series of the four most important competitions worldwide professional tennis circuit. In the news, criticism and the growing number of fans, there was definite pressure for the player to assume the post of "ambassador" for Brazilian tennis. This was evident after his defeat in the preliminary rounds for the then-unknown Marat Safin in the 1998 edition of Roland Garros, where entire teams of Brazilian journalists sent to Paris to cover the event immediately returned home, leaving the rest of the event without any coverage in Brazil. Kuerten announced his retirement on February 12, 2008 in an exclusive interview with "Globo Esporte", from Rede Globo. First, however, he made a kind of farewell tour where he participated in some major tournaments like the World Tour Brazil Open, Challenger Florianopolis, and the Masters Series in Miami, Monte Carlo and finally Roland-Garros. Gustavo Kuerten will always be marked by one of the biggest players in the world and undoubtedly one of the best in Brazil.
June 1, 2010, he received the trophy Philippe Chatrier, the highest honor of the world tennis  in recognition of actions developed by the Institute Guga Kuerten at Roland Garros.

             Wilma Glodean Rudolph

My photo

Wilma Glodean Rudolph (June 23, 1940 – November 12, 1994) was an
American athlete. Rudolph was considered the fastest woman in the
world in the 1960s and competed in two Olympic Games, in 1956 and in
1960.

In the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome she became the first American
woman to win three gold medals in track and field during a single
Olympic Games. A track and field champion, she elevated women's

as a civil rights and women's rights pioneer. Along with other 1960

                                Niki Lauda

Born on February 22, 1949 in Vienna, Austria, to a wealthy family, he became a racing
driver in 1968 and began racing in Formula One with the March team in 1973. Joining
Ferrari in 1974, he won his first Grand Prix, and his first world championship in 1975.

In 1976, Lauda suffered severe injuries, including horrific burns, in a crash at the German
Grand Prix at the Nürburgring. Near death, he nevertheless managed to get back into
his Ferrari six weeks after his accident. In one of the most famous World Championship
finishes in history, he lost the championship to James Hunt when he withdrew from
the last race of the year in Japan after only two laps because of the dangerously wet
conditions.

Lauda easily won the 1977 championship despite only winning three races.

After leaving Ferrari to join Brabham in 1978, Lauda endured two unsuccessful seasons,
notable mainly for his one race in a radical design which used fan-assisted aerodynamics.
The vehicle won its only race and was then promptly banned. In mid-1979, Lauda left to
found his own airline.

Lauda returned to racing in 1982 when his airline was struggling financially, winning a
third and final championship with McLaren in 1984.

He returned to running his airline, Lauda Air, on his retirement in 1985. Ousted by
boardroom politics in 1999, he managed the Jaguar Formula One racing team 2001-2002.

As a driver, Lauda was renowned for his clear-headed approach to driving, minimising risk
whilst maximising results, and ruthless self-interest.

                                        Babe Ruth

George Herman Ruth, Jr. (February 6, 1895 – August 16, 1948), best known as "Babe" Ruth and nicknamed "the Bambino" and "the Sultan of Swat", was an American Major League baseball player from 1914–1935. Ruth originally broke into the major leagues with the Boston Red Sox as a starting pitcher, but after he was sold to the New York Yankees in 1919, he converted to a full-time right fielder and subsequently became one of the league's most prolific hitters. Ruth was a mainstay in the Yankees' lineup that won seven pennants and four World Series titles during his tenure with the team. After a short stint with the Boston Braves in 1935, Ruth retired. In 1936, Ruth became one of the first five players elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.  Ruth has since become regarded as one of the greatest sports heroes in American culture. He has been named the greatest baseball player in history in various surveys and rankings, and his home run hitting prowess and charismatic personality made him a larger than life figure in the "Roaring Twenties". Off the field he was famous for his charity, but also was noted for his often reckless lifestyle. Ruth is credited with changing baseball itself. The popularity of the game exploded in the 1920s, largely due to his influence. Ruth ushered in the "live-ball era", as his big swing led to escalating home run totals that not only excited fans, but helped baseball evolve from a low-scoring, speed-dominated game to a high-scoring power game.
In 1998, The Sporting News ranked Ruth number one on the list of "Baseball's 100 Greatest Players". In 1999, baseball fans named Ruth to the Major League Baseball All-Century Team.In 1969, he was named baseball's Greatest Player Ever in a ballot commemorating the 100th anniversary of professional baseball. In 1993, the Associated Press reported that Muhammad Ali was tied with Babe Ruth as the most recognized athletes, out of over 800 dead or alive athletes, in America. The study, conducted by Nye Lavalle's Sports Marketing Group, found that over 97% of Americans, over 12 years of age, identified both Ali and Ruth.
According to ESPN, he was the first true American sports celebrity superstar whose fame transcended baseball. In a 1999 ESPN poll, he was ranked as the third-greatest US athlete of the century, behind Michael Jordan and Muhammad Ali.
Ruth was the first player to hit 60 home runs in one season
(1927), setting the season record which stood until broken by Roger Maris in 1961. Ruth's lifetime total of 714 home runs at his retirement in 1935 was a record, until first surpassed by Hank Aaron in 1974. Unlike many power hitters, Ruth also hit for average: his .342 lifetime batting is tenth highest in baseball history, and in one season (1923) he hit .393, a Yankee record. His .690 career slugging percentage and 1.164 career on-base plus slugging (OPS) remain the Major League records.Ruth dominated in the era in which he played.

Abebe Bikila

Abebe Bikila was born on August 7, 1932, the day of the Los Angeles Olympic Marathon, in the village of Jato, located 9 kilometers outside the town of Mendida, Ethiopia. His father was a shepherd. Abebe decided to join the Imperial Bodyguard to support his family, and walked to Addis Ababa where he started as a private.
Onni Niskanen, a Finnish-born Swede, was hired by the Ethiopian government to train potential athletes. He soon spotted Bikila.
1960 Summer Olympics
Bikila was added to the Ethiopian Olympic team only at the last moment, as the plane to Rome was about to leave, as a replacement for Wami Biratu, who had broken his ankle in a soccer match. Major Onni Niskanen entered Bikila and Mamo Wolde in the marathon.
Adidas, the shoe sponsor at the 1960 Summer Olympics, had few shoes left when Bikila went to try out shoes and he ended up with a pair that didn’t fit comfortably, so he couldn't use them. A couple of hours before the race, Abebe decided to run barefoot, the way he'd trained for the race. Bikila was warned by Niskanen about his main rivals, one of whom was Rhadi Ben Abdesselam from Morocco, who was supposed to wear number 26. For unknown reasons, Rhadi did not acquire his black marathon bib before the race, and instead was wearing his regularly assigned track and field bib number 185.
The late afternoon race had its start point and finish at the Arch of Constantine, just outside the Colosseum. At the start of the race the Australian Ron Clarke made a comment to Bikila about running barefoot.
During the race Bikila passed numerous runners, looking for the runner with number 26. By about 20 km, Bikila and the runner with number 185 had created a gap from the rest of the pack. Bikila kept looking forward to find the runner with number 26, who unbeknownst to Bikila was running right beside him. They stayed together until the last 500 m, when Abebe sprinted to the finish line. Bikila won in a record time of 2:15:16.2, becoming the first black African to win an Olympic gold medal.

"True Hero of Sport" of the day: Sasha Cohen

Today we're going to talk about Sasha Cohen, a U.S. figure skater.
She is the 2006 Olympic silver medalist, a three-time World Championship medalist, the 2003 Grand Prix Final Champion, and the 2006 U.S. Champion.
Cohen was born on October 26, 1984 in Westwood, California, a neighborhood in Los Angeles. Her nickname "Sasha" is a Russian nickname for "Alexandra". Sasha graduated from Futures High School in Mission Viejo, California in 2002.
In 2005, she published her autobiography, Fire on Ice. The autobiography was republished in 2006 adding a new chapter on the 2006 season.
A gymnast from an early age, Cohen switched to figure skating when she was seven years old, but it wasn't until she was eleven that she began to take the sport seriously.
Cohen rose to prominence in the skating community during the 2000 United States Figure Skating Championships. Just up from juniors, Cohen dropped from first place after the short program to second after the free skating and qualified for the world team. Too young for the World Figure Skating Championships, a loophole at the time would have allowed her to compete in senior worlds if she medaled at the World Junior Figure Skating Championships. Cohen did not medal at world juniors and so did not go to senior worlds.
During April 2006, Cohen started the Champions on Icetour, participated in the second annual "Skating with the Stars, Under the Stars" gala in Central Park and performed in the Marshalls U.S. Figure Skating International Showcase. On April 15, 2006, Cohen announced that she intended to compete into the 2010 season and the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. She said via her official website, "I will decide after the COI Tour how much skating and what events I will do next season."
Cohen announced on May 6, 2009 that she planned to make a comeback for the 2010 Winter Olympics. She received invitations to compete in the 2009 Trophée Eric Bompard and in the 2009 Skate America in the 2009–2010 Grand Prix Series. Cohen was forced to withdraw from both of her planned Grand Prix events due to an injury to her calf.
On January 21, 2010 she finally took to the competitive ice for the first time in four years at the 2010 AT&T U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Spokane, Washington. She debuted her program toEspaña Cañí, and skated a strong performance landing a triple lutz-double toe, a triple flip, a double axel, along with her signature spiral sequence and spins earning 69.63 points putting her in second place, just 0.43 from first place finisher Mirai Nagasu. However, her free skate, set to Moonlight Sonata, was filled with errors; she fell on a triple flip and had two-footed landings on a number of other jumps. Cohen finished fourth in the championships, behind Rachael Flatt, Mirai Nagasu and Ashley Wagner, and was not selected for the Olympic team, however was appointed as second alternate to the 2010 U.S. Olympic team and the 2010 World Championship team.
